And yes, the language is just a bit complex, but hopefully only as complex as it needs to be to deal effectively with the complexity of the imperfect real world of machine parts. In this and our next workshop we will present crystalline definitions of the various concepts and terms we use to establish Datum Reference Frames, in order to then describe the Datum Reference Frame establishment process itself and the rules which guide it.Īs we know, GD&T is a symbolic language with which to specify permissible limits of imperfection in manufactured parts in order to guarantee their assembly and operation. ![]() ![]() Of the three major compartments, we discovered that the last one with all its sub-compartments containing Datum Feature labels and their “Tolerance Zone Mobility” (Material Boundary) modifiers, represents a set of instructions for establishing the Datum Reference Frame-a Cartesian coordinate system-relative to which the Tolerance Zones defined in the Feature Control Frame are to be oriented and located by their associated Basic dimensions. In our last workshop we investigated the anatomy of Feature Control Frames including their structure, the purpose of their various compartments, what we stuff into each compartment, the intent of each piece of the code, and how we both read and “decode” Feature Control Frames. ![]()
